Learning task 1

Talking about tastes

(Activating prior knowledge and learning vocabulary)

Keywords: sour, sweet, bitter, fizzy, cold, hot, soft, hard, chewy.

What do these words mean?

(Extending vocabulary)

Write or draw a definition for the words in the vocabulary list. Teacher to rove and assist with reading and pronunciation of difficult words.

Making similes

To reinforce the learning from the vocabulary list and the sentence game (activity one) table (Word 44KB) by putting a tick in the box which shows which words go together to make true similes, for example, as soft as silk.

Zing and Zizz! activity

What you need

  • A selection of substances, such as flour, sugar, seashells, tea, and vitamin C tablets dissolved in water
  • Shallow dishes
  • Spoons
  • Magnifying glasses
  • Paper towels

Acids

  • Lemon juice
  • Orange juice
  • Vinegar
  • Grapefruit juice
  • Tomato juice

Carbonates

  • Washing powder
  • Baking powder
  • A piece of limestone
  • A piece of chalk or marble
  • Crushed egg shell

What you do

  • Choose one thing from the list of carbonates and one thing from the list of acids. Mix them together.
  • Observe carefully what happens, using a magnifying glass if necessary.
  • Test the selection of other substances and attempt to classify each of them as an acid, a carbonate, or neither of these.
  • Write a brief paragraph describing: what you were trying to find out; what you did to find it out; what happened; and what you were able to learn from these results.

Consensus activity

Complete the consensus activity using either the word "acid" or the word "carbonate" using the information you were able to find out from your tests.
