Learning task 1

Activating prior knowledge

What do we know about healthy food?

What is healthy food? What food do we need to keep ourselves healthy? What different food do other members of our class like/prepare at home? Use KWLchart (Word 34KB) . Students identify three things they already know about healthy food and three things they would like to find out about. Later they need to consider what sources they will access to find out the answers to their questions. The "what I've learnt" section will form part of their self evaluation at the end of the topic.

What are our favourite foods?

  1. Introduce the word "survey". Tell the students they are going to survey five members of the class about their favourite food and why. Model a range of question forms and appropriate responses. Give corrective feedback on responses. Rephrasing may be necessary. If consistent errors are made, highlight question or response on whiteboard and ask for clarification. Elicit a response closer to target.
  2. Students use Food Survey Form (Word 43KB) and collect data. Teacher observes interpersonal speaking skills. Discuss ways of displaying what they find out. Collect main groups of food types on the board. Build up a graph showing the numbers of students who like roast chicken, steamed rice etc. Do students from different cultures like different food? Identify these different types of food. Are they eaten at special times of the year?
  3. Students make "I" statements about the food they like best and why. This can be done in a small group or in front of the class depending on the confidence level of the students. Teacher models a response first. Teacher observes and records interpersonal speaking skills. (This could be completed as an ICT extension using a simple database.)
  4. What statements can be made from the analysis of the data? Make statements using "Some of us", "Most of ", None of us", "A few of us" etc. Is the food we like healthy food?
