Learning task 1: Unit overview

In this activity you will read texts that discuss overseas drivers on New Zealand roads. After studying close reading exemplars, you will complete a close reading activity on the text provided.

Introduce students to US 12420

  • study a model of US 12420 You will be assessed on how well you:
    • explain one main idea in the text, supported by a specific reference from the text
    • analyse the significance of a main idea [significance could be linked to a social, historical, physical, political or personal context], supported by a specific reference from the text
    • describe the effects of three Language features resource sheet (Word 36KB) , using correct terminology.
    • identify and analyse one way the text is shaped [eg: through structure or narrative technique], supported by a specific reference from the text
  • learn how to find main ideas of texts
  • learn how to paraphrase main ideas
  • learn how to analyse the significance of the main ideas of texts.

Introduce the theme of the challenges of driving in a different country

  1. Introduce this idea by writing on the whiteboard "Driving in New Zealand/Driving in another country". Choose a country where a large group of your students come from.
  2. Ask them to also consider what it is like for a new person coming to the country and driving a car there.
  3. Use the Think/Pair/Share strategy. Have students discuss and compare driving habits in New Zealand with their own country.
  4. Record responses on the whiteboard under the headings Plus/Minus/Interesting.
