Achievement objectives

Statistics, Level 2:

  1. Make sensible statements about the situation represented by a statistical data display drawn by others
  2. Interpret information and results in context.

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

  1. describe in their own words the situation represented in a bar chart and a tally chart
  2. use a bar chart and tally chart to make sensible predictions.
 

Language learning focus

Focus on building mathematical vocabulary and recording, reading, predicting and discussing mathematical patterns

Students will:

  • learn KeyWords (Word 39KB)
  • develop and understanding of the use of a chart to record, predict and read results through teacher led discussion and demonstration
  • practise using the mathematical language introduced in this unit until confidence is gained.

How to achieve the vocabulary and understanding outcomes

  • focus on key words and concepts
  • scaffold the process of using charts as a way to record and display patterns of data and specifically discuss all the information displayed on each chart and how it is shown.

Give students ample opportunity to become familiar with the new language by providing plenty of opportunities for recycling in other contexts.
